Encoding specificity principle
The closer the retrieval cues are to original leaning conditions, the more likely it is that information will be recalled
Effect of context on memory
Occurs through use of contextual cues to improve retrieval
What are contextual cues?
Environmental conditions present at retrieval that match those experienced during learning
E.g. sight, sound, smell, feel, temperature etc.
State dependent cues
Concerned with physiological or emotional state of a person at the time of encoding information
Experience when a person js in a particular mood is more likely to be remembered when they are in that mood again
