4 types of contractions
Agonist, antagonist, synergist, stabiliser
Agonist
Prime mover, main muscle responsible for movement
Antagonist
Muscle that opposes the action of agonist muscle(s) – this can happen as a stretch / passive resistance. Can also happen as a co - contraction situation.
Synergist
Muscle(s) that assist movements – generally poorer ability to work around the joint axis
Stabiliser / fixator
Muscles that are dynamic stabilisers of a joint - they typically fix one part of the body to allow the primary joint to move
