• frequently but not always asymptomatic (cervical spine =dysphagia)
• Osteophytosis of spine: spans >3-4 segments
• Paraspinous ligaments: calcification/ossification; “flowing wax” appearance on anterior vertebral bodies
• preservation of disc space
• some association with DM
