What is cracking?
Why is it useful?
is splitting up longer-chain hydrocarbons into smaller ones bc they are more useful
Name the 3 things involved in cracking oil
heat,moderate pressures,catalyst
State 4 steps in cracking liquid paraffin
porous pot heated strongly
liquid paraffin heated and evaporates
paraffin vapour passes over hot porous pot and the hydrocarbon molecules break down
product is ethene gas
Explain why cracking is necessary
Some fractions in crude oil arent in as much demand as petrol/diesel .
This means that fuel such as fuel oil /bitumen can be cracked to make petrol/diesel bc it is not in much demand
briefly explain what cracking involves
vaporised hydrocarbons passed over powered catalyst Aluminium oxide (catalyst) the long chain molecules split or crack on the surface of catalyst.
