What was NHS England
Department (separate from government)
Responsible for the planning and delivery of healthcare services + managed the budget of the NHS in England
Why was NHS England removed (PROS)
To streamline the government
NHS England + department of health and social care had overlapping roles + responsibilities
£1 billion saving by cutting 18,000 jobs (mostly admin) and redirecting funds
Faster policy implementation - brings the NHs under direct government control to speed up implementation of health policies
‘Puts the patients first’ by providing more money to GPS and hospitals (taken from cut staff)
CONS of NHS england abolition
Huge job loss with over 18000 mostly admin jobs removed
Reorganisation may take a long time and could be disruptive to patients (e.g policies + funding change)
Centralisation may reduce regional flexibility - local healthcare leader with have less autonomy (funds may be allocated incorrectly)
