A definite NP signals a 2 step in the construction of the reference.

• It is anaphoric: refers back to a first given construct.
• It is synthetic: not just the referent but all that gravitates around it.
• It requires memory: need to remember the referent and all its qualities.
• It insures a cohesive discussion: add qualifications to a given referent.

Textual anaphora (3 types): definite NP is preceded by the mention of that same referent in the previous cotext.

The same word is used in an indefinite NP then in a definite NP. Comprises all previous info.

> Non-strict textual anaphora: Adam had done rough translation drafts and then put the manuscript away.
= Manuscript refers to the previously mentioned drafts.
Different word (like a synonym) is used for the 2nd mention of the referent.

> 3rd person personal pronouns
They say an anaphora that reaches further. The referent is so stable that no need to be referred to with a lexical stamp.
