When the river loses energy and its load becomes too heavy for it to carry, material is then dropped/ dumped by the river starting with the heavies pieces

When the river enters a lake or sea
When there is an area of shallow water such as inside of a meander bend
The river floods on to the land on either side and the flood water flows slowly over this land
