Chronic condition of overgrowth of malassezia furfur (fungus) that is normally a commensal organism
What are the symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis?
Eczematous type lesions on scalp (dandruff), periorbital, auricular and nasolabial folds
Can cause otitis externa and blepharitis
What conditions are associated with seborrhoeic dermatitis in adults?
HIV
Parkinsons Disease
What is the management of seborrheoic dermatitis?
Hair
1) OTC zinc pyrithione (head and shoulders) or tar (neutrogena T/Gel)
2) topical ketoconazole
3) topical corticosteroids short term or selenium sulphide
Face and Body
1) Topical ketoconazole
2) short term corticosteroid use
Recurrence is very common
What are the symptoms of seborrhoeic dermatitis in children?
Cradle Cap=most common presentation
- presents within first few weeks of life
- erythematous lesion with yellow crusting
Face, nappy area and limb flexures can also be affected
What is the management of seborrhoeic dermatits in children?
1? baby oil and shampoo
2) Short term mild corticosteroid e.g. hydrocortisone
Normally resolves by 8 months
What is the difference between irritant contact dermatitis and allergic contact dermatitis?
Irritant contact
- common
- non-allergic reaction to exposure to weak acids or alkali e.g. detergent
- erythema common
- crusting and vesicles uncommon
- often on hands
Allergic contact
- Type IV hypersensitivity reaction
- Uncommon
- commonly seen on head after hair dye put on
- weeping eczema
- potent topical steroids required
What is Dermatitis Herpetiformis?
An autoimmune blistering skin condition associated with coeliac disease
Due to IgA deposition in the skin
What are the features of Dermatitis Herpetiformis?
Itchy vesicular lesions on the extensor surfaces
How is dermatitis herpetiformis investigated and managed?
Skin biopsy- shows IgA
