what are measures of central tendency?
methods of estimating mid point scores in sets of data
what are the three measures of central tendency?
mean
median
mode
eval median
S: not affected by extreme scores or anomalies
can be used in ordianl data unlike mean
W: not as sensitive as the mean as not all data is taken into account
can be unrepresentative in a small set of data
eval mean
S; most accureate measure of central tendency
uses all data in calculations
W: less useful if some scores are skewed/ anomalies
mean score might not be part of the data
eval mode
S: less prone to distortion by extreme scores
W; can be more than one mode in a set of data
doesn’t use all the scores
what are measures of dispersion?
measurements of the spread of scores with a set of data.
what is standard deviation?
used to show how data is distributed around the central point( mean)
eval standard deviation
S: is a more sensitive dispersion measure than range bc all scores are used
W: allows for the interpretation of individual scores
sidenote- the larger the spreader of scores teh greater the standard deviation.
other measures of dispersion?
range
percentages
correlational data
