Q

How did Augustine view Jesus’ death

A

Jesus was a second adam

God could rightfully condemn all of humanity to hell, but chooses to save some by the atonement

Humans cannot save themselves, and require Gods grace-through Jesus reconciling humans and god, this becomes possible

Q

What is Augustine’s analogy of the vineyard workers to explain salvation

A

A man hires workers for 1 denarius for a day
Gets more workers later on in the day but pays them the same wage
The earlier workers complain

However, the owner says he is not being unfair as he made a a contract and is fulfilling it; they agreed to work for a price

The payment was not a reward for hard work but fulfilling a promise

In the same way, salvation is not a reward for good behaviour, but a gift from god-a fulfillment of his promise of salvation

11
Q

Does Augustine believe in predestination or free will

A

He argues we should believe in both

God, as the causer of all things has predestined all, but this does not negate human free will

God causes things in a way which respect their nature; he preserves humans freedom to choose cooperation with grace or not

Q

Does Augustine believe in single or double predestination, and what are thery

A

Single predestination-God saves some souls
Double predestination-God saves some souls and condemns others

It is disputed which augustine believed
Some of his writings suggest that God condemns some to hell,
but mcgrath and hick argue that he favoured single predestination

17
Q

Who called the synod of dort

A

The Dutch Reformed Church

18
Q

What is the doctrine of election

A

Calvin’s idea that some people (the elect) are predetermined to achieve eternal life and others (the reprobates) for damnation

God chooses the elect based on his own will, not on human behaviour-Calvin admits this is a frightening idea

19
Q

What did martin luther say God chose the elect from

A

Their own free decision of faith

20
Q

What is Calvin’s belief in predestination based on

A

Scripture, which he saw as fundamental authority

He says teachings in pauls letters to the romans and the ephesians as clear and incontrovertible evidence of predestination

21
Q

Why does Calvin allow for God to choose for humans, without them having any choice in the matter

A

It is based on God’s nature as the sole and absolute power in the world-his creation is not abandoned to nature or to chance
Nothing happens unless it is the will of god

Humans are corrupted and wretched-nothing should happen on account of their worthless decisions

22
Q

Does Calvin say all action is pointless if it is already predetermined

A

Yes and no
Action will never change if you are elect or reprobate, but it is a sign you are elect-they will choose good acts
therefore you should live a life pleasing to god

23
Q

Does calvin believe in single or double predestination

A

Double-quite clearly]
God from the outset declares that some shall be saved and some damned

24
Q

According to calvin, was the fall predestined

A

Yes-the elects and reprobates have been determined forever

25
Why, from Jesus' death, did Calvin conclude that God must have condemned some to hell
He couldnt imagine jesus not being able to attract all to his cause However, not all people are christians Therefore, God has selected them for punishment
26
What is unconditional election
Term used by calvinists to describe how the sins of the elect are only cleansed by God and no through human action
27
What is limited atonement
The idea that Christs death was only for the elect Calvinists couldnt accept God willing something and people turning away from it
28
What is irresistable grace
The idea that the elect cannot say no to god
29
What do the elect get from Gods grace
They are sanctified, justified and can do no bad. This is because of the perseverance of the elect
30
WHat is the perseverence of the elect
The idea that the elect can do no wrong and are unable to abandon their faith, Because god has chosen their path for them
31
What are the 5 central points of calvinism
TULIP Total depravity-humans are wretched Unconditional election-humans have no say Limited atonement-not everyone will be elected Irresistable grace-the elect cannot say no Perseverance of the elect-The elect cannot turn away
32
What does determinism mean
Its the idea that all events are necessarily the result of antecedent causes
33
What is universal causation
The idea that the laws of cause and effect cause everything to exist, with no exceptions
34
Who described the two approaches to determinism, and what are they
Hard and soft determinism-William James
35
What is hard determinism
The idea that all actions are caused and determined-a free action does not exist It is incompatibilist-There are no exceptions to causation, not even free will
36
What is William James' metaphor for a hard determinist universe
It is an iron block
37
What is Soft determinism
It is the idea that all actions have causes, but free will does play a role It is compatibilist-Free will and causation are both possible
38
What was John Locke's position on determism
He was a philosophical determinist-a form of hard determinsm
39
Why does Locke say asking if we have freedom of will is nonsensical
They are both powers Freedom is to be able to do, or not do, something whereas will is to desire to do something A person can be free, but their will cannot
40
What examples does Locke give of freedom
A tennis ball is not free because it has no thought A man falling is not free, because he can think, but cannot choose, not to fall A man who hits his friend due to a tic, can normally think, and choose, what to do, but can not in this case-so he is not free
41
What is Locke's man in the locked room
A man is in a room with a friend, with a locked door He desires to stay in the room, because of the friend, so does not try the door He thinks he is staying in the room of his own free will, but this is not true
