How is diabetes defined?
Disordered metabolism with inappropriately elevated glucose due to deficiency of insulin and/or insulin resistance.
What is the main pathology of Type 1 Diabetes?
Chronic, autoimmune disease that destroys beta cells.
What is the main pathology of Type 2 Diabetes? (Initially and in later stages)
Initially: a failure of cells to adequately respond to insulin (insulin resistance) & high insulin secretion.
Later stages: impaired insulin biosynthesis/secretion by beta cells.
