Q

What happens within the stomach?

A

16
Q

What does bile do and where is it stored?

A

It emulsifies fats and aids digestion
Stored in the gallbladder (& is slowly released into the duodenum during digestion)

17
Q

Where are the duodenum, jejunum and ileum located?

A

Small intestine

18
Q

Purpose of the small intestine?

A

Where most nutrient absorption occurs.
Intestinal fluids help digest carbs, proteins and fats.
Villi enhance nutrient absorption

19
Q

What connects the ileum to the large intestine and what does it do?

A

The ileocecal valve - prevents the back flow of waste

20
Q

How long is the large intestine?

A

Around 1.5 meters

21
Q

Purpose of the large intestine?

A

Absorbs water and sodium while incubating bacteria that produce vitamin K and B vitamins

22
Q

How many sphincters within the rectum and anal canal?

A

2
One is under voluntary control, other is under autonomic control

23
Q

Name the 3 common digestive disorders

A

Indigestion
Constipation
Food intolerances

24
Q

What is indigestion?

A

(Also know as Dyspepsia). Discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen. Accompanied by bloating, nausea, or burning sensation.
Caused by overeating, eating too quickly or stress

25
How can reflexology help indigestion?
By focusing on the stomach and diaphragm reflex points. This helps relax digestive muscles, reduces stomach acid production
26
What can cause constipation?
Lack of fibre Dehydration Lack of physical activity
27
How can reflexology help constipation?
Target colon and intestines to encourage peristalsis
28
How can reflexology help with food intolerances?
Work on the liver, stomach and small intestines to reduce inflammation and encourage better digestion
