Name the 3 classes of diuretics
Loop diuretics, thiazide diuretics and potassium sparing diuretics.
What is the MOA of loop diuretics?
Inhibits Na+/K+/2CI- cotransporter in the thick ascending loop of Henle
What is the MOA of thiazide diuretics?
inhibits the sodium chloride transporter in the early distal convoluted tubule
What is two adverse effects of diuretics?
hyperkalaemia and hypernatraemia
What should you monitor with diuretics? (3)
Monitor serum electrolytes, potassium and renal function baseline.
What is the difference in potency of loop and thiazide diuretics?
Loop- potent (20-25% of sodium is reabsorbed)
Thiazide- not potent (5-10% of sodium is reabsorbed)
