Nitrogen narcosis
A state of altered mental status caused by breathing compressed air at depth
Barotrauma
As the diver ascends and the ambient pressure around him decreases the gases within the body’s air filled spaces will expand.
Decompression sickness
Caused by nitrogen bubbles in the blood and tissues coming out of solution during ascent.
They interfere mechanically with tissue perfusion and by triggering chemical changes within the body.
Pulmonary over pressurization syndrome (POPS) can cause: (4)
1) pneumothorax
2) mediastinal and subcutaneous emphysema
3) alveolar hemorrhage
4) arterial gas embolism
