Q

Actions on lost diver

A

(1) Proceed to the diver’s last known position (either their detached float,
surfaced buddy, last sighted bubbles or best approximation of position for free swimming operations) and lower the lost diver marker (LDM) to the seabed.
(2) Deploy a maximum of three Signal Divers at one-minute intervals. If the diver does not respond or surface after this time the situation is to be considered as an emergency and a narrative commenced. Any other divers will surface at this time.
These should be recovered or sent to the nearest point of safety, however as much information (depths, topography, tide, last known sightings) should be
gleaned from them as soon as possible.
(3) Once initial recall actions have been conducted and the location of the lost diver remains unknown, the Dive boat should reapproach the LDM, recover the slack in the riser and secure the excess (up and down the line). The supervisor should ensure that adequate slack remains to allow for local tidal range for the
period of the search to prevent the surface marker buoy submerging.

(4) Should the other divers have sufficient air and dive time available the supervisor should consider deploying the divers to search the datum or last known area. During this time, and if not already done so, they should consider bringing the standby diver to immediate notice to conduct a search around the datum.

(5) Inform all exterior authorities (Coastguard, Harbour Master, Civil Police, shore team, parent ship) of the situation requesting aid and additional craft to
search the area and shoreline. When formulating a search plan be aware of tidal stream and prevailing weather; any wrecks or obstacles for the diver to foul on;
and possible exit routes. Also, any other clean divers or dive teams in the area to assist in the search.
(6) Continue with the search until the diver is found or conditions prevent any further search.
