dna replication Flashcards

(5 cards)

1
Q

3 enzymes and function for dna replication

A
  1. H bonds break apart bases using DNA HELICASE
  2. each polynucleotide used as template as new mononucleotides line up and form phosphodiester bonds using DNA POLYMERASE
  3. new full dna molecules reform phosphodiester and H bonds and twist into double helix using DNA LIGASE

Q

what is semi conservitve replication

A

-original double helix unzipped and seperated

-both parent strands from original DNA molecules are used as template for new strands

-newly synthesized DNA contains one parent strand and one new complementry strand

Q

why use a triplet code?

A
  • only 4 types of bases

-there are 20 necessary amino acids

-3 bases is the minimum number that provides enough combinations to code for each amino acid
