If a signal is heard, turn switch to ON, hold for no longer than 5 seconds then return the switch to ARM. signal should cease, then notify ATC and RCCNZ ASAP.

what is the procedure for testing an ELT?

• Testing to be done only within first five minutes after the hour.
• Ensure ELT switch is selected to ARM
• select 121.5MHz on aircraft coms radio
• Turn ELT selector to ON, listen for 3 siren sweeps (lasting 1-2 seconds) and then turn ELT switch back to ARM

In the event of an emergency ELT activation it’s vital that search time is not wasted, therefore what must you do?

• ensure ELT is ON ASAP after an emergency is experienced and leave it ON until rescued
• If survivors leave the accident scene, ELT may be carried with them only if a portable aerial is in the unit or is inserted.

• powered aircraft or gliders with no more than two seats when remaining 10NM of aerodrome.
• single seat powered aircraft when pilot has portable ELT
• glider or microlight plane if at least one occupant is equipped with an ELT
• aircraft ferried for ELT Installation, provided no passenger onboard
• for a period of 7 days when the automatic ELT is inoperative, and a portable ELT is accessible to each person onboard the aircraft.
