_Step 2: R.A.C.E. _
In the event of fire (for example):
Rescue - An individual
**Alarm **- Call for help and pull Fire alarm,
Confinement - Confine the problem (closing the door,)
Extinguish & evacuate - To evacuate the space; leave the area of danger
Step 3: Evacuation
Partial (site)
- Follow the basic principle of RACE
- Remove the patient away from the risk area, confine the risk area, place patient in a safe area
- Take them out and away from room (risk area) to the hallway/ nurse station
Horizontal
- Move your patient from one smoke compartment to another
- East to West; West to East divided by fire/smoke retardent doors
- On the same plane but pass fire/smoke retardant doors
Vertical
- Evacuate two floors below the risk area/event
Total
- Building at risk
- Bringing all the patient to the ground floor and situate patient in a designated safe area (next building across)
Roles and Responsibilities in evacuation
- Zone monitor
- Evacuation monitors
- Searchers
- Traffic Monitors
Zone monitor (nurse in charge, nurse coordinator, senior nurse)
- Taking directives from fire marshals
- Responsible to notify the directives to the roles
- Must be alert, know what’s going on, know the directives well
Evacuation Monitors
- Moves the patients away from the danger area into the safe area
Searchers (needs to know the floor)
- Goes from room to room to check and see if there is anyone who is left behind
- Mark the doors that are cleared and empty
Traffic Monitors
- guide people to the designated area, lead them
- Ensure that there are no obstacles away that will disrupt the flow of the evacuation
Priorities in evacuating patients
Green – ambulatory (Move first)
- Able to independently
- Able to remove and clear the area thus provide more space for the following patient
Yellow – semi-ambulatory (Move second)
- Hindrance to navigate
Red – immobile (Move last)
- Dependent
- Bed Ridden
