What is empyema?
A
The collection of purulent fluid in the pleural space.
Often this is caused by pneumonia.

How is empyema treated?
A
Broad spectrum IV antibiotics initially - then tailor as necessary when culture is obtained. Drain chest via 5th intercostal space, midclavicular line.
