What is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work?
Energy is anything that causes change e.g.throwing a ball or boiling water
What are the different forms of energy?
Heat: Particles in any material will vibrate more and more as their heat energy increases
Sound: Waves of energy that travel from place to place through materials. The particles of the material vibrate as the energy moves through the material.
Light: Energy that comes from any light source, i.e. the Sun, a lamp. It can travel through empty space.
Kinetic: The energy an object has when moving.
Potential: The energy stored in an object.
Nuclear:’The energy stored in the nucleus of an atom.
Chemical: The energy stored in the bonds between molecules.
Electrical:’The energy of certain particles when moving through electrical wires.
How do you calculate the energy to perform simple tasks?
You put useful energy over input energy x100
What are the different energy sources on earth?
Wind,solar,hydroelectricity,biomass,wave,tidal,geothermal,folssil fuels, nuclear fission
What are the renewable and non renewable energy sources?
Renewable: an energy source that is infinite- it will never run out. E.g wind, solar, hydroelectric, biomass, wave, tidal, geothermal,
Non renewable: an energy source that is finite- it will run out e.g. fossil fuels and nuclear fission
What is sustainable energy sources?
Using resources wisely so that they don’t run out of
What are the advantages and disadvantages of the future energy needs on earth?
Wind: advantage: it’s clean disadvantage:only generates power when wind is blowing
Solar: lower electricity bills, high upfront cost
Hydroelectric: low operating cost, limited acssesibility
Biomass: waste reduction, air pollution
Wave:limitless resource,EMF
Tidal: tides are easily predicted, cost is very high
Geothermal:low greenhouse gas emissions, high initial cost
Fossil fuels: high energy output , pollution
Nuclear fission: reliable, high cost
What are the sustainability issues that arise from our generation?
.Fossil fuels cause global warming and acid rain
.Wind farms can be unsightly, cause noise and pollution
.Nuclear power plants- accidents
What is work?
Using force to move one object a certain distance
What is the principle of conservation of energy?
Energy cannot be created or destroyed but can be converted to another form
What is the unit of energy?
Joules
What is energy dissipation?
Is when energy changes for, without preforming a useful function
How can you reduce energy?
.Turn off lights when not in use
.shower instead of bath
.replace fossil fuels with renewable energy
