Simple Squamous Epithlieum
Locations: Kidney Glomeruli, renal corpuscles, Air Sacs of lungs, lining of heart, blood vessels, and lymphatic vessels, and serosae
Functions: Diffusion, Filtration, Secretion (air sac gas exchange, capillary endothelium diffusion)
Simple Cuboidal Epithelium
Functions: Secretion and Absorption (Active)
Locations: Kidney Tubules, ducts, secretory portions of small glands, ovary surface
Simple Columnar Epithelium
Function: Absorption, secretion of mucus, enzymes, and other substances (ciliated type propels mucus or reproductive sells via cilliary action)
Locations: (Non-ciliated): Lines digestive tract, gallbladder, and excretory ducts of some glands
(Ciliated): Lines bronchi, uterine tubes, some regions of uterus
Contains: Goblet cells, microvilli, cilia
Psuedostratified Columnar Epithelium
Function: Secrete substances (mucus), propulsion of mucus by ciliary action
Location: (Ciliated): Trachea, upper respiratory tract
(Non-ciliated): Male sperm carrying ducts, ducts of large glands
Characteristics: Goblet cells, cilia
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
Function: Protects underlying tissues in areas subjected to abrasion
Location: (Nonkeratinized): Moist linings of the esophagus, mouth, and vagina
(Keratinized): Epidermis (dry)
Transitional Epithelium
Functions: Distends readily, permits stored urine
Location: Lines the ureters, bladder, proximal urethra
Stratified Cuboidal Epithelium
Functions: protection, secretion, absorption
Locations: ducts of some larger glands (sweat, and mammary)
Stratified Columnar Epithelium
Functions: Protection
Locations: Pharynx, male urethra, lining some glandular ducts, anus, mammary/salivary gland
