Types of Malfunctions and Describe each
Total- pull main rip cord nothing comes off your back
Partial- pull main ripcord something comes out, but canopy does not fully or properly deploy.
Corrective action for Pack Closure
After pull raise right shoulder for 2 seconds
- if nothing happens raise right shoulder and repeat
- if parachute fails preform cutaway procedures.
Horseshoe Malfunction
- Do not attempt to clear this malfunction
- perform cutaway procedures
Bag Lock
- Do not attempt to clear this malfunction
- Perform cutaway procedures
Pilot Chute Hesitation
- after pull, raise right shoulder for count to two
- if nothing happens raise right shoulder for two seconds again
- if parachute fails preform cutaway procedures
Hung Slider and Snivels
- Pull toggles to 100% break position for 3-4 seconds
- release to 50% brake position
- if slider still hung repeat once
- if slider is still above cascade point after two attempts to clear, perform cutaway procedures
- if slider is below cascade point, perform canopy controlability check
- if canopy is uncontrollable perform cutaway procedures
Knotted or Broken Suspension Lines
- Perform Canopy controllability check
- if canopy is uncontrollable perform cutaway procedures.
Broken Control Lines
-Unstow both breaks
-steer with good toggle and rear riser on side of broken control line
-determine flare point at safe altitude with both rear rises(above 1500ft agl)
fly landing pattern and land using both rear risers
Pilot Chute over the Nose and/or Through Suspension Lines
Pull toggles to 100% brake position for 3-4 seconds
if pilot chute is still over preform controllability check
if uncontrollable preform cutaway procedures.
Closed End Cells
Pull toggles to 100% brake position 3-4 seconds let up slowly
if end cells do not inflate repeat once
if end cells do not inflate perform canopy is I controllability check
Premature Break Release
Unstow other brake
preform controllability check
Line Twist
- Grasp both rear risers with thumbs down
- Pull risers apart and kick legs in bicycle motion
- Do not unstow brakes until twists are clear
- maintain altitude awareness
- if twists are not cleared by 2500ft ago make a cutaway decision.
Holes or Tears
If hole is in bottom skin preform canopy controllability check
if hole is in top skin (blue sky) perform cutaway procedures
Line Over
Do not attempt to clear this malfunction
Perform cutaway procedures
Floating Ripcord
Look and Identify malfunction
trace ripcord cable with index finger and thumb of right hand toward ripcord cable making a O around cable,
Trace ripcord cable to ripcord handle or pull ripcord cable if unsuccessful preform cutaway procedure
Hard Pull
Reach across with left hand in a punching motion to assist right hand pulling the ripcord
if unsuccessful preform cutaway procedure
