Group 2 (HGV) licence – mandatory criteria
No severe hypoglycaemic event in the past 12 months
Full hypoglycaemic awareness
Blood glucose monitoring ≥2 times daily, including times relevant to driving
Demonstrates understanding of hypoglycaemia risks
No other debarring diabetic complications
Group 2 (HGV) licence – monitoring evidence & application
Must use a blood glucose meter with a memory function
Records required for at least 3 months before applying
Insulin-treated applicants must complete VDIAB1I form
Group 1 drivers (car/motorcycle) on insulin
Can drive if:
- Hypoglycaemic awareness present
Drivers are usually contacted by the DVLA
Group 1 drivers on tablets, exenatide, or diet control
Tablets or exenatide: no need to notify DVLA
If tablets can cause hypoglycaemia: No more than 1 episode requiring assistance in last 12 months (if 2 then DVLA informed and lose license)
Diet controlled only: no requirement to inform DVLA
