(Natural selection)
First step
Within a species there is normally a range of characteristics. This variation is caused by differences in an organisms genetic material
(Natural selection)
Second step
The organisms with characteristics that are best suited to the environment will survive and breed. This is known as “survival of the fittest”
(Natural selection)
Third step
The organisms that breed pass on their genetic material to their offspring. The offspring are more likely to have the characteristics that made the parent organism successful
(Natural selection)
Fourth step
The process is repeated many times. Over a long period of time, this can lead to the development of new species.
