What is a hypothesis?
A hypothesis describes the effect that changing the independent variable will have on the dependent variable.
What are the components of an experimental method?
Hypothesis, independent variable, dependent variable, controlled variables, control group, repeat and expected outcomes
What is the independent variable?
It is the variable changed in order to address the aim.
What is the dependent variable?
It is the variable that is measured and is usually on the y axis.
What is a controlled variable?
It is a variable that is kept constant throughout the experiment to ensure that any change in the dependent variable is caused by the independent variable only. The word “SAME” must be mentioned when listing controlled variables.
What is a control group?
It is a group that is not manipulated by the experiment, in order to provide known results and act as a standard of comparison to the effect of treatment.
What is the purpose of repeats in an experimental method?
In order to decrease chances of error and improve accuracy.
What is an expected outcome?
It is similar to the hypothesis but it must be stated what will happen.
What does the cell theory state?
The cell theory states that:
- all organisms are made up of cells
- the cells come from pre-existing cells and that
- the cell is the smallest living organizational unit.
What are common features in cells?
All cells
- have an outer plasma membrane/ cell membrane that encloses the fluid contents of the cell
- have a cytoplasm
- contain DNA
