What organs are involved in excretion?
Liver
-Kidney
-Lungs
-Skin
Is urea less soluble than ammonia?
Yes
What produces bile pigments that are xcreted in the feaces?
Breakdown of heam from heamoglobin
What happens to body mass during weight loss?
-Body fat/glycogen broken down and used for respiration
-Respired to produce carbon dioxide and water
-Waste products cause decrease in body mass
Define excretion
The removal/ processing of waste from the body
Define Metabolic waste
Waste produced from metabolism e.g CO2, urea
Define deamination
Removal of ammonia from amino acids
Define egestion
Removal of undigested waste by defaction
Define secretion
A process by which substances are produced and discharged from a cell, gland or organ for a particular function in the organism
What does excretion maintain?
Excretion maintains normal metabolism and homeostasis by keeping levels of certain substances in the blood
What are the main waste products of excretion?
-Carbon dioxide
-Nitrogenous waste in the from of urea
What does the body do with excess amino acids?
-The body cannot store amino acids
-But they still contain energy so in the liver potentiality toxic amino acids are removed(deamination)
-This makes a soluable and highly toxic compound-ammonia
What happens to the ammonia produced at deamination?
Ammonia is converted into a less soluable compound called urea which is transported to the kidneys for excretion
2NH3 + CO2-> CO(NH2)2 + H2O
