Ovulation releases a secondary oocyte, which is arrested in metaphase II.
If a sperm penetrates the secondary oocyte:
acrosome reaction
It triggers completion of meiosis II.
This produces:
One small polar body (which degenerates),
And one large cell — the ovum (the mature egg).
The nucleus of the ovum then fuses with the sperm nucleus, forming a zygote.
