What does Fetal Asphyxia mean?
Without a Pulse
What causes Fetal Asphyxia?
Impaired maternal blood flow to the fetus (Placental Insufficiency)
What results in Fetal Asphyxia?
Hypoxia
Hypercarbia
Respiratory & Metabolic Acidosis
Primary Apnea
> Deprivation of Oxygen
Oxygen & Stimulation will induce respirations
Period of rapid breathing followed by apnea
HR begins to fall
If apneic, baby will begin to breath when given oxygen and stimulated
Secondary Apnea
> Unresponsive to stimulation
Deep irregular gasping
HR & BP Decrease
If continues, HR & RR cease, O2 falls, death occurs
Provide Pos. Pressure Ventilation with an FIO2 of 1.0
