Trait
Enduring disposition or tendency that influences behavior
Objective test
Structured, standardized personality tests using clear scoring (e.g., MMPI, Big Five assessments).
Projective test
Tests that use ambiguous stimuli to reveal unconscious processes (e.g., Rorschach inkblot, TAT).
ID
unconscious, instinctual drives; operates on the pleasure principle (immediate gratification).

Ego
rational part; operates on the reality principle (balances demands of id, superego, and real world).
Superego
moral conscience, internalized rules and ideals. Rewards and Punishes
Repression
Blocked from your memory or “forgotten”
Projection
Expressing your own uncomfortable feelings towards someone else.
Guy who likes men but is ashamed will be shameful to gay people
Displacement
Placing your feelings towards others on other things that aren’t real or just a substitute
Sublimation
When using displacement but for a productive outcome. (Sports performance, writing a song etc)
Regression
Going back to an earlier stage of psychological development. (Start sucking thumb again)
Denial
Refusing to accept reality because it is too threatening.
(“This can’t be happening.”)
