~have them eat or drink if conscious
~glucose tabs
Stroke
~weakness, paralysis, difficulty speaking, visual problems, dizziness, altered conciousness, severe headache
~rapid onset
~affects one half of the body
~F - Facial droop, ask them to smile
~A - Arm drift, have them close eyes and raise arms. one will drop
~S - speech. they will slur. have them say sentences with S sounds.
~T - time to call 911. when were they last normal
Shock
~sudden drop in blood flow
~not enough O2
~loss of blood, heart attack, allergic reaction, trauma, infection, poisoning, burns.
~cold, clammy, weak, faint, dizzy, restless, agitated, confused, nauseated, thirsty,
~cover with blanket
Overdose
~Narcan (naloxone) for opioids -reverses the effects
~nasal spray
Artery Bleeding
~spurting blood
~pulsating flow
~bright red
Vein Bleeding
~Steady slow flow
~dark red
Capillary Bleeding
~simple scratch
~slow even flow
Minimal Bleeding
~irrigate, clean, cover
Excessive Bleeding
~direct pressure
~add more gauze
~pressure bandage
~tourniquet 2-3” above injury
1st Degree Burn
~hot, one layer, red
2nd Degree Burn
~2 layers, white, blistering
3rd Degree Burn
~all layers, broken blisters, charring flesh
Thermal Burns
~caused by heat
~remove jewlery and clothing
~cool burn
~do not put under shower water or ice water
~cover with dry dressing
~prepare for shock
Electrical Burns
~turn off current
~2 wounds (entrance and exit)
~may cause cardiac arrest
