HUD Usage requirements
To facilitate the maintenance of proficiency and take full advantage of safety enhance-ments, Captains must deploy and use the HUD (when equipped and operable) as the pri-mary reference for all phases of flight below 10,000 feet AGL when operating as the:
- PF: 50-percent of legs minimum
- PM: 100-percent of legs
The HUD (when equipped and operable) must be used at all times when conducting the fol-lowing operations:
- Takeoff or approach with windshear reported in the vicinity of the airport.
- CAT I ILS approach. When visibility is reported below charted minimums aircraft must be EFVS approach certified applying C048 Addendum.
- Non-ILS approach [757, 767, & 777 ONLY] with visibility reported at or above charted minimums (EFVS use optional; descent from DA/DDA/MDA down to 100 feet above TDZE authorized to use enhanced vision only).
- CAT II ILS approach (EFVS use optional).
- CAT III ILS approach (EFVS use optional).
- HUD Takeoff Guidance required < RVR 500ft/150m (EFVS use optional).
- Low-visibility taxi ≤ RVR 1200.
C048 Op Spec
C048 has been revised; the following limitations and conditions apply. Prior to conducting an approach beyond the final approach fix, or beginning the final approach segment of an instrument approach procedure (Refer to “6.55 Approach Requirements”):
- The latest weather reports for the airport must indicate that the RVR for the runway to which the approach will be conducted is at least 1,000 feet (1,600 feet if the tower at the airport is closed).
- If RVR information is not available, the visibility must be at least 1/4 sm. • When using these lower visibilities to start an approach crosswind limits are APS limits or 15 knots, whichever is less.
- These conditions are only applicable to domestic CAT I ILS approaches with EFVS.
When is an Alternate Airport required?
No alternate airport is required if for 1 hour before and 1 hour after the estimated time of arrival at the destination airport, the appropriate weather reports or forecasts, or any combi-nation thereof indicate:
- The ceiling will be at least 2,000 feet above the airport elevation; and
- Visibility will be at least 3 miles.
NOTE If using Exemption 17628 see below.
Irrespective of the above ceiling and visibility requirement for an alternate, under Domestic Operations an alternate will be required when:
- The crosswind component for the intended landing runway is forecast to be in excess of 25 knots, not including gusts, for 1 hour before and 1 hour after the ETA.
- The braking action is expected to be less than Medium at ETA.
- The destination has no control tower or the tower will be closed at ETA.
- The flight is scheduled to arrive at an unlighted airport less than 30 minutes before sun-set or less than 30 minutes after sunrise.
- Thunderstorms are reported or forecast ± 1 hour of ETA.
- Other conditions as determined by the Captain or aircraft Dispatcher.
