Patient-centered care focuses on the patient and the individual’s particular health care needs. The goal of patient-centered health care is to empower patients to become active participants in their care. This requires that physicians, radiologic technologists and other health care providers develop good communication skills and address patient needs effectively. Patient-centered care also requires that the health care provider become a patient advocate and strive to provide care that not only is effective but also safe
- Discharge letters are sent to the GP, but the patient copy has no clinical information on it about what has happened to them
- A doctor recommending a tablet whilst the patient does not fully understand the risks or benefits, or perhaps tells them they ‘must take a certain tablet A diagnosis of cancer is made and the GP is told, but the patient has to wait until an outpatient appointment to find out the result.
- A patient attends for an Ultrasound, and is told the results will be sent to the GP in 2 weeks (when a backlog means it will more likely be 4-5 weeks)
- A patient is trying to tell the doctor how much their chronic lung condition limits them socially, and the doctor simply suggests a trial of a new inhaler, perhaps knowing that it may not make a significant difference.

15% of exam is based on GPCME content.
