Either:
A direct weighing and drying method which will determine the weight of the water in the substrate.
OR
A carbide meter (speedy carbide test) - the sample is placed in a container with a weighed portion of calcium carbide in another separate section. The samples are shaken and mixed together. If moisture is present acetylene gas is produced.
