Sweeter reds, with a little fizz. Cold winters would stop fermentation, resuming in Spring. 1840's dry reds became normal

When did the modern era of Barolo begin? What types of things happened?
In the late 1960's early 70's, producers like Gaja and Renato Ratti began championing site specificity, whereas before Barolo was always a blend from multiple sites. Modernists like Elio Altare and Enrico Scavino also started tinkering with smaller newer barriques, amongst other things, making wines that could be consumed easier, and younger.

Who are the Barolo Boys and what did they do?
The Barolo Boys were the modernist movement in the region beginning in the late 70's. Elio Altare, drove his Fiat to Burgundy and saw how profitable the industry there was compared to the struggles of most Barolo producers. He, together with Chiara Boschis (e. pira) and later Mario de Grazia in 1993, popularized french oak, and quicker turnaround times to market for Barolo wines.

Warm air from the Po River Valley and humid air from the Mediterranean.
