- teach pts how to identify, report, and manage s/s of allergic reaction and A/E

coordinate the care of the patient to ensure that other potentially nephrotoxic or ototoxic drugs are not added to the treatment plan
what are the most important drug core knowledge points needed to decrease or minimize A/E
- need peak/trough levels monitored throughout treatment because of narrow therapeutic margin
- monitor for signs of ototoxicity, inculding balance and gross hearing
- monitor for drug-induced diarrhea
- administer gentamicin and extended penicillins at least 2 hrs apart to ensure the efficacy of gentamicin
- ensure that culture/sensitivity testing have been done to ensure that gentamicin is the correct drug
- ensure adequate hydration
- gentamicin s/b given around the clock as ordered
