What are the 4 types of erosion
Hydraulic action, attrition, solution, abrasion
Hydraulic Action
When the power of the waves forces air and water into the rock, causing faults
Solution
When salts or chemicals try to dissolve the rocks they touch.
solution example
sea water dissolves certain rocks like limestone, chalk
Abrasion
The wave picks up rocks which rub against the cliff faces. The rocks smoothen the surfaces like sandpaper
Attrition
When angular (sharp) rocks get picked up and knock against eachother. The sharp corners become smaller, smoother and rounder
Longshore drift
The movement of material in the direction of the prevailing wind along the coast by the repeated swash and backwash. It goes from west to east
Which way do sediments move in? (lsd)
West to east
Longshore drift steps
1) Waves approach the beach in the direction of the prevailing wind
2) Breaking waves force sediemnt up the beach as swash
3) Backwash moves sediemnt back down the beach under gravity at right angles
4) The material is transpoted along the coast from west to east
Deposition
When material that is being transported is dropped
When will deposition occur
What are the 3 processes at the coast
erosion, transportation and deposition
swash
the water that rushes up the beach when the wave is at shore
t
backwash
the movement of water running down the beach
Headland
a section of land jutting out into the sea
bay
A concave section of coastline next to a headland
headland and bay forming key vocab (13)
erosion, hydraulic action, abrasion, destructive waves, headland, differntial erosion, bay, chalk, bands of rock, clay, limestone, concave
boulder clay
softer part of a headland
how is a cave formed
lines of weakness (faults) occur in headlands, abrasion/hydraulic action erodes the faults to form a cave. Over time the cave is widened and deepened
How is an arch formed
Eventually, the sea cuts through the cave forming an arch, The sea erodes the foot of the arch and widens it. Once the roof of the arch becomes too heavy. It collapses
How is a stack formed
Part of the former cliff is not isolated as a stack, over time the stack is under cut and collapses
How is a stump formed
It’s the remainder of the eroded stack
cave, stack arch, stump vocab
large crack, small fissure, cave, arch, stack, stump
undercutting
When the base of a cliff has been eroded leaving an unsupported piece of rock
