* Dysphagia
* Odynophagia (Pain when swallowing)
* Sensation of food sticking in the chest or throat
* Progressive from solids to liquids
* Vomiting or regurgitation of saliva or food
uncontaminated by gastric secretions
*Change in dietary habits
*Weight loss – correlates with dysphagia, diet changes,
tumour related anorexia
*Hiccups

- No dietary intake for ~ 4 hours after insertion
- Frequent fluid intake whilst eating
- No evidence to support fizzy drinks, could cause
problems with acid reflux

Ability to chew
Continuing dysphagia
Position/Posture of patient
Liquid→Soft/smooth→soft→normal
Chew well
Sit upright
Avoid rushing food
Plenty of fluids
