What are glaciers?
GLACIERS ARE MASSIVE SHEETS OF ICE THAT SLOWLY MOVE ACROSS THE EARTH, CHANGING THE LANDSCAPE
How are glaciers formed?
More snow builds up in the winter than melts in the summer. The snow compresses into FIRN (like packed snowballs). Lower layers turn to SOLID ICE under the weight
What are the two types of glaciers?
Alpine Glacier, Continental glacier
An Alpine Glacier is
A glacier that is located in a mountainous region that moves slowly downward in elevation (Ice moves down the mountain)
A Continental Glacier is
A glacier that occupies a large piece of land (e.g. Greenland)
What causes glaciers to move?
WEIGHT and flow
What are things formed by glaciers? (8)
U-Shaped valley, Till, drumlin, Esker, Kettle lake, Moraine, Erratic, and Striations
A U-Shaped valley is
Formed by an alpine glacier moving down a valley and scraping the walls. This leaves a characteristic “U” shape to the valley.
Till is
Material such as loose clay and gravel that gets deposited by the melting ice of a glacier (The glaciers carry them as they move)
A Drumlin is
A tear drop shaped hill that runs parallel to the flow of ice. They point in the direction of ice flow and can be several kilometers long.
An Esker is
A winding ridge of till deposited by a stream flowing in and under a melting glacier.
A Kettle lake is
A depression filled with water that was formerly occupied by a block of stranded ice
Moraines are
Landforms made of till
An Erratic is
A boulder-sized rock dumped by a glacier. The rock is usually of a different type than the surrounding rock
Striations are
Grooves carved into the bedrock by pebbles and cobbles carried at the bottom of a glacier.
