Some have these domestically but in many cases they must be obtained thru international trade
E.g. Russia annexed Crimea in 2014 to gain access to Black Sea fleet, fearing the loss of land and a port, both physically and resources
Global influence contested ( politics)
Political spheres of influnce can be contested, leading to tensions over territory and physical resources which if exacerbated can lead to open conflict
E.g. South China Sea, numerous diputed islands, claimed by China and many US allies e.g. Taiwan, Philippines.
China has tried to prove that it owns majority SCS w the ‘9-dash line’, the USA considers this a sphere of influence since the second WW

An area or territory beyond a country’s national borders over which it feels it should have the power but without having any formal authority there
Asian tensions
The rising economic importance of certain Asian countries (China or India) on the global stage increased the geopolitical influence of the region but also creates political and economic tensions within it

Different ideologies (western capitalism-NA,SA Europe), Middle East, Asian
