Q

Define sea area A1

A

A vessel would be within the radiotelephony (RT) range of a coast radio station such as UK Coast Guard. Where the coast station has continuous very high frequency (VHF) Digital Selective Calling (DSC) facilities. An approximate range for this might be 30 to 50 nautical miles.

Q

Define sea area A3

A

Excluding areas A1 or A2, a vessel would need to be fitted with a recognised maritime satellite system (RMSS). The main one used on most ship is the international Maritime satellite (INMARSAT) system. Using eight satellites that are in Geo stationary orbit of the Earth. They circle the Earth at the same rate as the Earth rotates, this is an area from 76° in the northern hemisphere to 76° in the southern hemisphere. We will use INMARSAT as our main RMSS on this course.

Q

Define sea area A4

A

Excluding all other areas, this is often defined as being the polar regions, above and below 76°. It must be remembered however that any vessel outside of sea areas one and two without the appropriate RMSS fit also effectively enters sea area A4.
