What are the processes of learning and rehearsing a group dance work?
- Description from the choreographer on the expressive intention of the dance.
- Teacher taught the dance phrase by phrase, explaining why each relevant physical skill, body action, element of movement and choreographic device was used and how this related back to the E.I. The phrases were then joined to make a section.
- This process was repeated two times at various rehearsals as there were three sections to dance.
- These sections were then joined to make a complete dance work of three sections with a beginning, development and resolution creating a unified composition.
- Dances were learnt through both imitation and repetition. This developed my movement memory.
- Some of the rehearsal time was spent on learning and interpreting the dance (early part of the rehearsal period). The rest of the rehearsal time was spent on refining so that a polished dance performance could be achieved.
- After much refining and discussion on interpretation of the dance and the understanding of why the choreographer choices of movement vocabulary developed the E.I. I was ready to perform.
- We all went to the performance environment, (the school hall) to rehearse in the actual performance space to become acquainted with the space and adapt and become aware of our spatial orientation.
- I felt confident and committed myself to communicating the expressive intention well. I knew where I had to dance in relation to the performance area.
