What is the presentation?
A few weeks after an infection a symmetrical ascending muscle weakness starts
What are some triggers for Guillian Barre?
campylobacter jejuni CMV mycoplasma zoster HIV EBV vaccinations
What does the trigger cause?
antibodies that attack nerves
what muscles are affected more?
proximal (unlike other neuropathies)
e.g. trunk, resp, cranial nerves
What other symptoms can you get?
pain e.g. back, limb
autonomic dysfunction e.g. sweating, tachycardia, bp changes, arrthymias
How is it diagnosed?
Clinical diagnosis
nerve conduction studies - slow conduction
LP
What does the LP show?
high protein
normal WBC
What is the treatment?
IV Ig
plasma exchange
