big thistle, japanese thistle, Cirsium Japonicum
LV, SP
sweet, cool

like treat like; thistles cause bleeding but root stops it.

  1. cools blood stops bleeding: uterine bleeding, epistaxis from anger, hematuria, hemafecia- all due to heat
  2. reduces swelling, promotes healing of sores: internally or externally to heal carbuncles, abscesses, sores, swelling.

externally: double the dose. 30-40 grams, soak limb in tea.

MR: anti-inflammatory, HTN, jaundice, hepatitis

bitter, cool

  1. colls blood, stops bleeding/lower jiao: hemmorrhoids, hemafecia, epistaxis, hemopsysis (dysentery w/ blood) - in LV, LI, known for LI
  2. cool LV: hypertension, dizziness d/t LV heat, red eyes, arteriosclerosis, all def heat in LV (but not if have low blood pressure or are on anti hypertension meds)

Contra: cold in SP/ST, low BP

flat fir leaves, Chinese arborvitae, Platycladus orientalis

LU, LV, LI

bitter, astringent, sl. cold

  1. Cools blood, stops bleeding: astringency property helps all types of bleeding: mouth, nose, BM, urine
  2. expells phlegm, stops cough=expectorant for thick, yellow, sputum. Inhibits bacteria
  3. dermatology: dry skin, dermatitis, burns, loss of hair d/t too much oil, can powder and use topically.

Contra: stasis

A

immortal crane herb, agrimony, agrimonia pilosa

High in Vitamin K, big in Europe/cherokee used it/tonic for LV/GB

LU, LV, SP

bitter, astringent, neutral

  1. astringent, Vit K=all types of bleeding/all locations (D/n treat stasis)/ all temps. good post surgery/battle. high silica content, stops cuts from bleeding
  2. Goes to LU (w/c astringes LI)= diarrhea
  3. strengthens LV to clean out LV
  4. STDs, douche, war wounds= herbal neosporin

A

three seven, pseudoginseng root, panax notoginseng

LV, ST

sweet, sl Bitter, Warm

Stops bleeding, moves blood, reduces swelling and pain

have in medical kit

  1. bleeding d/t blood stasis: fibroids, post partum
  2. reduces swelling and pain: similar to moxa, brings oxygenated blood. use topically for bruises, trauma, inflammation
  3. coronary HT disease

darker is treated and of lower quality

Contra: pregnancy, yin def, anti coagulant drugs

side effects: n/v, dizziness

  1. Cools blood, stops bleeding d/t heat: epistaxis menorrhagia
  2. moves the blood/expels congealed blood: clots, amenorrhea, pain (bi Zheng: pain of arthritis), sports injuries, trauma thats going inside, fibroids

bulrush/cat tail pollen, Typha angustifolia

LV. PC

sweet, neutral

Crude/yellow or wine fried= to move blood

Charred/stir fried w/ vinegar=stop bleeding

  1. Astringes blood, stops bleeding (if charred): uterine, nose, bowel; all areas/temps (bleedind d/t hot or cold)
  2. If want to move blood- use untreated: amennorhea, cramps, post-partum, abd pain, pain: abd, chest, heart, cramps. CAn add San Qi for HT/chest pain
  3. promotes urination, blood in urination

make sure H2O it grows in is nontoxic

contra: pregnancy, allergy to pollen

spicy, bitter, warm

  1. stops bleeding/warms channels: internaly stops bleeding, epistaxis, hemoptysis
  2. warms womb, pacifies fetus/unstable pregnancy d/t cold
  3. dipels cold, aleviates pain (Bi Zheng= arthritis) moxa
  4. externally=moves blood, stims circulation, skin (damp diseases-damp eczema) warts- moxa cone over wart

contra: heat

Ai Tiao= moxa stick

Yao Tiao= herb stick

Ai Rong= moxa wool/punk

  1. Excess heat= cool blood
  2. excess cold= warm channels, expel cold, stop bleeding
  3. Deficiency=tonify, control blood, stop bleeding, astringe
    Sp Qi def- cant hold blood in the channels
    LV Blood Def- may lead to stasis
    Yin def- leads to yang rising
  4. blood stasis- move blood, stop bleeding (fibroid)
  5. Qi stasis- smooth & regulate qi, stop bleeding
  6. Trauma- astringe, stop bleeding, tighten/tone tissues

Note: #s 4/5 can be psyco/emot trauma packed away as a clot. If trauma hidden, subversive- treat like #4
