American oak is from Quercus alba. European forests contain Quercus petraea and Quercus robur. Most forests contin both. Hungarian forests mostly contain the slower growing and more aromatic petraea while robur is more common in lower altitudes and richer soils like around Limousine. So Hungarian oak is more aromatic because the slow growth concentrates these compounds.
