  • Bleeding
  • Wound maceration
• Full body immersion
  
  • Cardiac instability
  • Profound epilepsy
  • Suicidal pts
  • Bowel incontinence
  • Infections that can be spread by water

• Use liners for patients with burns/wounds/blood-borne pathogens
• Add disinfectant and if open wounds are present
• Standard precautions in infected environment (goggles, gown etc. - splashing)
• Local Immersion:
  
  • Decreased temp sensation
  • Impaired cognition
  • Recent skin graft
  • Confusion Disorientation
  • Deconditioned state
• Full body immersion
  
  • Confusion
  • Disorientation
  • Decreased strength, endurance, balance or ROM
  • Medications
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Hydrophobia
  • Respiratory problems
  • Alcohol ingestion
  • Very hot/warm water
  • Pregnancy
  • Multiple sclerosis
  • Impaired thermoregulation

• Treatment Temperature:
  
  • 103-110 F = whirlpool
  • 100 F = Hubbard Tank
  • 95-100 F = PVD
  • 92-96 F = open wounds
• Treatment time: 20 or up to 30 minutes
