Q

4 things that must be included in diagram of H bonding

A
  • partial charges
  • lone pair on F/O/N
  • correct atoms
  • F/O/N–H–F/O/N bond angle should be 180

Q

what determines the strength of a H bond?

A

all H-bonds are the same strength, always discuss the number of H bonds

Q

how is an idid formed?

A

the random movement of electrons creates and instantaneous dipole (temporary uneven distribution of charge)
this induces a dipole in neighbouring molecules

4
Q

2 factors that affect the strength of idids

A
  • Mr - the higher the Mr the more electrons, therefore more polar, stronger idids (take more E to break, higher mpt/bpt)
  • shape of the molecule - more linear, so pack more closely together
