Splint
stabilizes an extremity after surgery and provides temporary support to broken bony structures or operative areas
Splints vary greatly…
with the type and purpose each requiring specific application techniques
Common rules
apply them from the distal part of the extremity to the proximal part, always remove jewelry on the affected limb prior to applying a splint, and after applying a splint, check for circulation, movement, and sensation in the areas beyond the splint
Report to nurse
if pain in the extremity is worsening, if the movement is more limited than previously, and if the pt reports numbness or tingling in the fingers
