Q

webbing

A
  • when a strong fabric is woven into strips, often made of synthetic fibres
  • used to strengthen products that need to remain flexible whilst withstanding high tension, gives high tensile strength

Q

lamination

A
  • involves bonding two or more layers of materials to make it stronger and more rigid, adding layers to a material to form a composite
  • paper can be laminated in a plastic pouch to create a stronger, more durable and water-resistant sheet
  • foam core board and corrugated card are layered by lamination making them stronger and stiffer
  • in plywood, layers of wood are compressed and glued at 90 degrees to each other to increase strength

Q

bending

A
  • used to reinforce and stiffen a materials, triangles or v shapes are used to create strong structure or reinforce weaker structures
  • chair and table legs curved and shaped in a specific way for added strength
