What is incarnation?
Incarnation is when God took on the human condition to become Jesus.
Two things about the meaning of incarnation
-the fact that God was prepared to experience being human shows how much God loves the human race
-God knows what it is like to be human, and this helps Christians to value God’s love
Explain Luke’s account
-focuses on Mary’s role in the incarnation
-tells the story of when the angel Gabriel visited Mary
-Jesus will be conceived through the power of the Holy Spirit
-God gives Mary the choice of whether or not to be Jesus’ mother
-Jesus is fully human and fully God
Explain Matthew’s account
-focuses on Joseph’s part in the incarnation
-tells the story of how Joseph planned to break up with Mary because she was pregnant before they were married
-angel visited Joseph is one of his dreams and told him it was right to marry Mary, because her child was conceived by the Holy Spirit
-the angel also calls Jesus by the name ‘Emmanuel’ meaning ‘God is with us’
Luke and Matthew’s both main points in there accounts:
-Mary was a virgin
-God worked through human beings to bring about his plan for humanity
-Jesus was conceived by the Holy Spirit
-Jesus was the Son of God
-The angel Gabriel announced Jesus’ birth
What is the word of God?
Another name for the son of god, who is both fully God and a separate person of the Trinity
3 points about the relationship between the Word and God
-Catholic church teaches that God is three people: the Father , the Son and the Holy Spirit (trinity)
-The son of God is also known as the Word of God
-The word of God became human in the form of Jesus , which is why Jesus is sometimes called ‘the Word of Gods made flesh’
Explain Jesus as the Son of Man
-believes this because he lived a complete human life filled with human experiences and emotions.
-Jesus’ human nature is emphasised in the phrase ‘the Son of Man’ which can be used as a general title or as a title for someone who has been given power and authority by god
-Jesus used this phrase when he talked about the suffering he would have to endure during his crucifixion
Explain Jesus as the son of God
-when Jesus was asked ‘Are you the Messiah , the Son of the Blessed One?’ Jesus replied ‘I am’ , he acknowledged he was the Son of God.
-Jesus then went on to say ‘you will see the Som of Man seated at the right hand of the Power’- here Jesus used the title ‘Som of the Man’ to emphasise humanity
-God is eternal , so has no beginning or end meaning that Jesus could not become God after his death. So resurrection proves that Jesus always was God , ht during his life on earth he limited himself to the human condition.
