Dystopian, coming of age book with a focus on relationships and characterisation.
This novel is authoritarian in that the “clones” do not possess freedom and lack autonomy, as well as being considered below humanity
Tommy Kathy and Ruth attempt to escape this system via their deferrals, however that fails. There is a small act of rebellion here but no overarching or group rebellion, as Hailsham’s attempt fails.
There is also the moral issue of whether organ harvesting etc can be justified. There is a juxtaposition of morality, as these clones die for the good of humanity.
Finally, there is a theme of a more scientific and analytical world leading to a loss of love and compassion.
